Strategic Planning Task Forces
December 2016 Update
Dozens of faculty and staff have participated in Task Forces that were created to identify how P&S can both reinforce its many strengths and also improve programs and processes to support the 2020 Vision strategic plan’s goal of making CUMC “a destination campus and a great place to work, study, visit, and get medical care.” I am pleased to update everyone on the recommendations made by the Task Forces.
Please recall that the Task Forces were asked to make recommendations to address priorities that were raised by randomly selected faculty who participated in focus groups conducted in the Spring of 2015. The goal was to find ways to improve the P&S experience for faculty, staff, students, patients, and visitors. This work comes at a time when P&S is experiencing rapid growth—in faculty numbers (net 6% per year), clinical activity (up 8.4% last year and 10% so far this year), research funding (NIH grants up 17% last year), and philanthropy (the last two years have been our best ever).
The Task Forces have made six major recommendations—each with specific goals and an assigned senior administrator who will be responsible for achieving these goals.
Improve faculty effectiveness: Mark McDougle, CEO, ColumbiaDoctors
- Select, plan, and implement a new integrated electronic medical record with NYP and Weill Cornell.
- In the interim, optimize Crown and related EMR systems.
Improve work/life balance: Karina Davidson, Vice Dean, Organizational Effectiveness
- Create a culture of respect for trainees, faculty, and staff.
- Evaluate and implement specific improvements in work-life balance.
Reduce administrative burden: Martha Hooven, Vice Dean, Administration
- Implement a new research financial reporting system and a unified dashboard for compliance and credentialing.
Transform our work environment: Amador Centeno, Vice President, Facilities Management and Campus Services
- Create spaces that encourage social interaction and collaboration, including the closure of one block of Haven Avenue (a.k.a. the Haven Square project)
Enhance communication and collaboration: Catherine Freeland, Associate Vice Dean, Marketing and Strategic Communications
- Improve our websites, including an internal communications intranet.
- Optimize our brand messaging.
Serve our community: Ross Frommer, Vice President, Government and Community Affairs
- Establish an Office of Service Learning to expand key educational and service opportunities for students, faculty, and our neighbors.
- Establish a new faculty recognition academy, the Academy of Community Service.
We already are making excellent progress toward some of these goals, but others, such as the Haven Square project, will take longer to complete.
Once again, I want to thank everyone whose time and effort were critical to the success of the Focus Groups and Task Forces, as well as all faculty and staff who are working to achieve our goals.
