Say Hello to the 2012 Schaefer Research Scholars

The College of Physicians & Surgeons has announced the winners of the Schaefer Research Scholars Program awards.

Five awards were provided to research scientists from around the world, including current P&S faculty, or those soon to join P&S. The candidates were nominated by P&S department chairs or center/institute directors.

The recipients are as follows:

Paul Albert, PhD, of the University of Ottawa, Canada, in recognition for his research of transcriptional regulation of the serotonin system and mood disorders.

Rebecca Anne Haeusler, PhD, Naomi Berrie Diabetes Center, P&S, in recognition of her research in atherosclerosis and insulin action.

Mojgan Hosseini Nahgavi, PhD, University College Dublin, Dublin, Ireland, in recognition of his research in the role of specialized stable microtubule (MT) networks in infection by medically important viruses.

Alexander I. Sobolevsky, PhD, Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics, P&S, in recognition of his research of Transient Receptor Potential Channels.

Antonio Feliciello, MD, PhD, University of Naples, Italy, in recognition of his research of human glioblastomas.

Awards include a cash prize of $50,000 for each recipient and up to $200,000 to support direct research expenses. This program, which supports research to advance the general understanding of human physiology, is made possible through a generous endowment from the Dr. Ludwig Schaefer Fund.
