White Coat Ceremony, 2008

P&S students celebrate specific milestones along their way to completion of the MD degree.  The White Coat Ceremony, begun at P&S in 1993, marks their entry into the medical profession.  Students are reminded of the importance entrusted to them as they train to become compassionate and humanistic physicians.

Upon completion of their preclinical fundamental curriculum, students are brought together for the Steven Z. Miller Student Clinician Ceremony, which marks their transition to clinical education.  Named for Dr. Steven Miller, a Columbia faculty member who was a popular and dedicated teacher, this ceremony celebrates teaching in the classroom and in the clinical curriculum.  Students learn of the importance of working as a team and of their role as compassionate clinicians-in-training and educators themselves.\

Class Day and Commencement mark the end of the student journey.  This is a time where the school and the university community come together to celebrate the students' achievements and officially welcome them into the profession of medicine and assume the role of doctor.
