What is an Honor Code?

A code of professional conduct committing ourselves to act professionally and ethically in all our interactions.

Why is the Honor Code important?

Together, our roles are transitioning from students to professionals in an all-encompassing academic setting. This unique situation requires training and awareness of our new responsibilities to ourselves and to the profession. In the intense medical school setting, the line between peer and colleague can become particularly blurred, potentially and unintentionally leading to unprofessional behavior that can be harmful to peers. Additionally, we are becoming representatives of the honorable medical profession, the foundation of which is built on trust. We must be cognizant of how our actions may misrepresent our profession, and commit to acting professionally.

What is the Honor Code Committee?

The Committee is a group of students that serves to promote and educate the student body about Honor Code principles, advise students with questions and/or challenging situations involving Honor Code principles, prevent common pitfalls, and offer a means of safe reporting for violations.

Who is on the Honor Code Committee?

The committee consists of P&S students selected by the Senior Associate Dean for Student Affairs after recommendation by class presidents. Every class has representation. The Chair and Vice Chair are post-MCY students in good standing. Committee members are reappointed every year.

How do I use the Committee?

The committee is at your service in 2 key ways: Honor Consults and Safe Reporting:

            Honor Consults

Honor code consults are useful for many different situations, including: (1) students who are unsure if a particular behavior or activity violates the Honor Code, (2) students requiring help dealing with challenging situations involving Honor Code principles, (3) students unsure if a particular potential violation should be reported. Students with any questions or issues are encouraged to consult us for guidance and direction. The committee can help you determine if something should be reported or dealt with through other means (and how best to do so), and will work to prevent similar issues from arising in the future.

Honor consults are seen only by the Chair and Vice Chair and remain completely anonymous to anyone else. Consult us by emailing: pshonorcode@columbia.edu.

            Safe Reporting

Honor code violations are reported to the committee so we can help stop inappropriate behaviors and prevent them from recurring. The committee investigates to determine whether or not a violation has occurred. If the committee determines that a violation has occurred, the case will be forwarded to the Senior Associate Dean for Student Affairs, who will work with the accused to correct these behaviors. If the committee determines that a violation has not occurred, no further action is taken and the Senior Associate Dean for Student Affairs is not notified. The accuser will remain completely anonymous from the accused unless the accuser grants explicit permission otherwise.

How do I report an Honor Code violation?

Please note there are other means of confidentially reporting honor code violations, including:

●      Ombuds Officer

●      Center for Student Wellness Director/Assistant Director

●      AI:MS Director

What happens after I report the violation?

In sum, the procedure follows a few steps:

1.     A quorum of the committee meets with the accuser to determine if the case warrants further investigation. The accused will not yet be notified.

2.     If the committee determines that the case warrants further investigation, the committee meets with the accused and continues gathering information.

3.     The committee deliberates as to whether or not a violation has occurred.

4.     If a violation has occurred, the committee forward the case to the Senior Associate Dean for Student Affairs to rectify the behaviors.
