Course Registration

REGISTRATION INSTRUCTIONS

Registration Process

  • All registration takes place in OASIS, and accounts are based on the student's Columbia UNI. Three times a year, lotteries will be held to set up initial enrollment. Students will make selections within OASIS, and the lottery will enroll students based on availability and each student's lottery number.
  • Dual degree students and those returning from a year off should email pselectives@columbia.edu for specific questions, and if they do not have access to OASIS.

Choosing Electives and Registering

  • Please review the OASIS catalog to determine which electives you want to take, and when you can take them.
  • Not all electives are offered during all months, so please read the descriptions carefully, including the "Notes" section for each course link.
  • We recommend students review the OASIS catalog thoroughly before each lottery opens.
  • If a course requires permission, it will be wait-listed in OASIS. To obtain permission, follow the instructions posted in the OASIS catalog description (See "Waiting List" field).

Self-Arranged Preceptorships

If you plan to arrange or have already arranged a preceptorship, please follow the steps below to add it to your schedule:

  1. Obtain faculty permission to complete a preceptorship under their supervision, and forward to pselectives@columbia.edu.
  2. Add yourself to the OASIS waiting list. Search for your code by going to Add Course > Select Department > Search > Add for code ending in -036. For example, a self-arranged Dermatology preceptorship will be found in the DERM department as DRN036.
  3. Compose a one-page proposal detailing the Objectives, Learning format, Methods of feedback, and Grading criteria.

The Senior Associate Dean for Student Affairs will then review your proposal, and the Office of Medical Education will inform you of approval. Once approved, we will approve you from the OASIS waitlist.

Self-Arranged Research Electives

If you plan to arrange a research elective, please follow these steps to add it to your schedule:

  1. Obtain faculty permission to complete a research project under their supervision, and forward to pselectives@columbia.edu.
  2. Add yourself to the OASIS waiting list. Search for your code by going to Add Course > Select Department > Search > Add for code ending in -950. For example, a self-arranged Dermatology research elective will be found in the DERM department as DRN950.
  3. Compose a two-page proposal detailing the Title, Name of Faculty, Hypothesis/Purpose, Objectives, Methods, Goals, and Role of the Student, and send to pselectives@columbia.edu, Subject Line: "Nonclinical Elective: [Insert Course Code]".

The proposal will be reviewed by the Associate Dean of Student Research and the Senior Associate Dean for Student Affairs. The Office of Medical Education will inform you of approval. Once approved, we will finalize your registration in OASIS.

All research electives require a two page summary at the end of the month in order to receive credit.

Away Electives

If you have arranged an away elective that is 4 weeks in length (3 weeks for Uni of California system), please follow these steps:

  1. Add yourself to the OASIS waiting list. Search for your code by going to Add Course > Select Department > Search > Add for code ending in -700. For example, a self-arranged Dermatology away elective will be found in the DERM department as DRN700.
  2. Forward the original confirmation you received from the away site to pselectives@columbia.edu that includes the dates of the rotation. These dates will be modified in OASIS once aproved from the wait list.

All away electives must be added by the 4 week deadline. Please contact pselectives@columbia.edu if you are planning to attend an away elective that has not confirmed within 4 weeks of the start date.

Self-Arranged Global Health

  • All self-arranged international electives MUST be approved by the Offfice of Medical Education at least 6 weeks prior to departure or registration. Please review the Global Health CourseWorks site for instructions on how to add a self-arranged international elective.

Scholarly Project and Interview/Vacation Months

To register for SP months, you must add yourself to the waitlists for the months that correspond with your proposal. If these months change for any reason, you must notify the SPP Coordinator by contacting psspp@columbia.edu. Registration for the first month will occur after students have declared a track, submitted a mentor agreement, and submitted a proposal.

To register for Vacation/Interview months, you will need to add two different courses: VA91P and VA92P. Please register for these in sequential order, with VA91P corresponding to your first Interview/Vacation month, and VA92P corresponding to your second. Vacation can be found in the OME Department in OASIS.
