Academic & Career Planning
The mission of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University is to prepare graduates to be leaders and role models who define excellence in patient care, medical research, education, and health care policy. Their experiences at Columbia will enable them to shape the future and set the standards of medicine in the United States and in the world while exhibiting the highest principles of humanism and professionalism in their responsibilities to their patients, to their community, and to society.
Columbia’s innovative and flexible new curriculum drives this mission. Its reorganized academic structure – replacing first, second, third, and fourth year categories with the three major segments Fundamentals, Major Clinical Year, and Differentiation & Integration – takes advantage of the latest knowledge about how adults learn and is designed to inspire students to assume ownership of their own learning. It fosters a team-based approach, an essential element of medicine today, while at the same time allowing students to explore their individual goals in medicine. Multiple dual-degree programs in addition to cross registration with Columbia University and research and global health opportunities all offer unique ways for students to customize and maximize their education.
Faculty committees oversee the policies and monitor student progress throughout their enrollment at P&S – this support includes tailored individual academic advising as well as career planning. Policies specific to the requirements above are delineated in the “Policies” section and it is the responsibility of the student to be familiar with them throughout their time here.
