The DISCOVERY Process

The DISCOVERY Process Overview

To request data from the CDW for research, complete a DISCOVERY form after obtaining proper approvals from the IRB and HIPAA. Note that the DISCOVERY process cannot begin unless all proper approvals from IRB and relevant governance bodies have been obtained, regardless of whether your data will be de-identifiable or identifiable.

There are 6 steps in the DISCOVERY process. On the pages linked below, we provide some detail on each step, using a case study on pancreatic surgery as an example:

  1. State the research question
  2. Define data source location
  3. Define variables
  4. Define population of interest
  5. Define layout of output data
  6. Specify Level of Data Confidentiality
  7. Submit your request form
